POTTERS Bar Town fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Parkfield in their first competitive game of the new season.

Nick McKoy shoots against Berko

Spartan South Midlands League outfit Berkhamsted Town upset their Ryman League opponents in the Herts Charity Cup encounter on Saturday.

Three second-half Berko goals, two of which came soon after the restart, settled the tie and saw Steve Browne's side well beaten by the Lilywhites.

The Scholars had started brightly with Serge Makofo providing problems for the Berkhamsted defence from the wings.

As early as the sixth minute he surged into the box from a short corner to set up Nick McKoy. The midfielder's effort could only find the side-netting.

Defensive errors and some wayward passing meant that Berko were also finding chances to score.

New signing Alex McCarthy had their best early opportunity, but when clean through Bar keeper Dave Lovell blocked his shot.

Five minutes later another Bar defensive slip provided Ashley Addison with a chance. However, he shot wide.

The Scholars' passing football improved as the first half continued as they tried to control the game.

Junior Luke's run from full back produced a save from Berko stopper Sam Bridges, while a Sean Bonnett-Johnson cross floated across goal, evading all his colleagues.

Luke continued to threaten and just on the half hour his shot flew just wide.

Striker Sam Adejokun then put a header over the top from a Bonnett-Johnson cross.

Minutes later it looked as though Berkhamsted had taken the lead.

Addison found the back of the net, only for it to be ruled out for a foul on Lovell.

A Hector Mackie free-kick produced Bar's next effort with a McKoy drive failing to connect with the incoming Adejokun and Aaron Gayle.

George Sifonios drove into the box as the half came to a close, but his cross evaded his team-mates in the area.

The game was effectively ended with two goals within five minutes of the restart.

Firstly, McCarthy volleyed home a corner from the left.

Just two minutes later a free-kick from the same side was not cleared and Tony Fields bundled the ball home.

The dose was almost repeated, this time from the right, but Addison's effort was ruled out for a push on the keeper.

The Scholars tried to get back into the game with Gayle's running causing some problems.

Mackie hit a free-kick on target and was only denied by a Bridges save.

Berko responded with probably the best move of the match.

A fine long ball from Denham over the top of the Bar defence found Fields in space. Lovell produced a fine save to deny the attacker.

The third and final goal came with 10 minutes remaining.

Once again Potters Bar failed to close down a right-wing cross from McCarthy.

Fields was lurking to head in his second of the match to knock the Scholars out of the Herts Charity Cup.
