POTTERS Bar Town opened their league campaign with a 2-0 home defeat against Leyton on Saturday.

For the visitors the dangerous Denis Maharjan netted in each half to ensure his side claimed the three points.

It was a case of déjà vu for Maharjan as he hit a brace on the first day of the season at Parkfield last term while playing for Edgware Town.

Before kick-off a minute's silence was held in honour of former Scholar Gary Doolan who was killed in a road accident earlier in the month.

The game began in a slow fashion with neither side creating any real scoring opportunities in the opening exchanges.

Gregory Ngogi had the first chance for the Lilywhites on 10 minutes, he was put clean through but shot at Bar's former Ware stopper Ryan Jones.

The action switched immediately to the opposite end.

Home winger Junior Dadson carried the ball down the left before switching it to Andre Humphrey on the right.

He tried his luck from distance however he hit his attempt far too high.

Bar midfielder Hector Mackie was next to have a crack towards goal.

He won the ball in the visitor's half, rode one challenge and hit a low left footed drive just wide from 20 yards.

The breakthrough came 10 minutes before the break.

Bar won a free-kick in a dangerous position at the Leyton end, but ended up getting caught out themselves.

With too many men pushed forward for the move Leyton capitalised.

Mackie's free-kick hit the away wall and they counter attacked in numbers.

Stephen Brady broke down the right, had the beating of Bar left back James Nash and crossed into the middle.

The ball was flighted perfectly for Maharjan to arrow a header past Jones and give his side the lead at the break.

Just six minutes into the second half Maharjan scored his second.

Steve Browne's side gave away a free-kick just outside their box and were punished.

Midfielder James Duncan rolled the ball to Maharjan who smashed an unstoppable deflected effort into the net.

Soon after Bar had an excellent chance to pull one back.

A Mackie ball over the top fell to Dadson, he collected and held up play.

He laid it back to midfield man Milton Elengie who could only hit a tame low shot wide of target.

Bar's miserable afternoon was compounded when impressive debutant Harry McCrystal was stretchered off injured.

It was clear Bar were never going to score. Their best chance of the game fell to centre half Theo Daniels.

A Mackie free-kick was cleared to full back Nash.

He swung in a lovely cross to Daniels who saw his powerful header tipped over by the under-worked Leyton keeper Sam Tanner.

Bar are due to play in the league against Thamesmead Town tomorrow night (Wednesday) and then travel to Redbridge on Saturday.
