MARK HEMMINGS reports

DEFENDER Precious Koko tucked home a penalty two minutes from time to hand the Scholars a 1-0 win over Wingate & Finchley on Saturday.

Just 10 minutes before the only goal of the game, Potters Bar goalkeeper Ashlee Jones had made a heroic spot-kick save to keep the hosts in the match and record Town's first clean sheet in 15 games.

The Ryman League Division One North match was a very tight and often niggly affair which could have gone either way.

Both sides put on a poor, scrappy display in the opening 45 minutes which failed to produce a goal.

Scholars winger Junior Dadson had the best chance for the Parkfield club.

His weak volley following a George Sifonios pass from midfield was easily held by teenage visiting goalkeeper Phil Carpenter, who is on loan from Barnet.

Forward Daniel Clarke caused the hosts problems as he constantly tried to twist and turn his marker with his back to goal.

Clarke should have scored for Wingate on 24 minutes.

A curled free-kick taken by Jerome Boyce on the left was met by the striker in front of goal, but he failed to find the target with a close-range header.

Wingate right midfielder Tasvan Bradshaw-Brown was fortunate to have stayed on the pitch before the break.

He picked up a yellow card for colliding with Sifonios and then tripped Nathan Smith on the halfway line.

It looked a certain second booking, but referee Sam Lewis kept his cards away.

Wingate dominated the start of the second period as Bar struggled to get out of their half for the opening 10 minutes.

Two headed chances then fell to the Scholars. Firstly, Sam Adejokun headed wide from Duane Jackman's centre.

A Koko free-kick from the left-hand side near the halfway line was then met by defender Ryan Bernard, who nodded just over the target.

The visitors had goal-scoring opportunities of their own.

Craig Ellis fired over from the edge of the area before Clarke got past Theo Daniels and crossed for Andy Edmunds whose diving header missed the target.

Dadson came within a whisker of breaking the deadlock for Bar on 70 minutes.

He collected the ball after a surging run down the left by Smith, but his right-footed drive inside the box came back off the foot of the post.

The game then sparked into life. Sifonios fouled Ellis just inside the Bar box and the ref pointed to the spot.

Home stopper Jones guessed correctly and pushed away Dean Nyman's resulting penalty.

Boosted by their goalkeeper's efforts, Potters Bar looked for a winner.

A Jones goal kick was nodded on by Duane Jackman and Dadson raced through.

Lacking composure, the wideman fired high over the Wingate goal.

Bar's chance then came with two minutes left. Striker Adejokun got away from his marker and was brought down.

The referee looked to have awarded a free-kick on the very edge of the box, but after consulting his linesman a penalty was given.

Koko stepped up and sent keeper Carpenter the wrong way to claim victory for Potters Bar.

Steve Browne's men are in action on Saturday at Parkfield when they take on Arlesey Town in the Ryman League.

Koko just misses milestone

POTTERS Bar defender Precious Koko was within minutes of scoring the 1,000th goal of the Ryman League Division One North 07-08 season.

The accolade went to Ware striker Chris Ellerbeck, who fired in a volley on 85 minutes - just three minutes before Koko - in his side's 2-0 win over Waltham Forest away in East London on Saturday afternoon.
