Hatfield Town took the derby day spoils, and in the process, moved level on points with second-placed Bedford with a game in hand, after a 2-1 win over runaway league leaders Welwyn Garden City at the Gosling Stadium today (April 4).

Despite being just four games from guaranteed promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, WGC began sluggishly and found themselves 2-0 down inside half an hour thanks to goals from Jack Robertson and Gary Sippetts.

Then a moment that could have shifted the balance of the game on another day. Yasin Boodhoo brought down Matt Hodges in the 18-yard box but the resulting penalty was pulled wide by Ben Collins.

The Citizens huffed and puffed throughout the second half but Hatfield’s defence remained rock solid until one minute from full-time when Joel Norris slammed home a 20-yard volley.

However, Ashley Purser’s men held on for a valuable three points to keep their unbeaten home league record intact and hand WGC their fourth league defeat of the season.
