Herts Charity Shield Final

Welwyn Garden City 0 Tring Athletic 1

WGC suffered heartbreak in the Herts Charity Shield final last night, going down 1-0 to a determined Tring side in terrible playing conditions.

Athletic got the only goal of the game in the 48th minute when a corner from David Whicker was met by the head of striker Mark Burfoot to thunder past the helpless Simon Bartley and into the goal.

The Citizens had dominated the first half, with Craig Tomkins and Howard Hall spurning great opportunities, and they were made to pay with a lacklustre second-half performance.

Both teams were hard pressed to play the ball on the deck at the County Ground in Letchworth, and in truth the second 45 was hardly the spectacle a final should be.

But Tring will be well pleased with their efforts.

After the game, WGC caretaker manager Dave Lewis revealed he will be leaving the club with immediate effect, but stated he had enjoyed his time in charge.

Of the game, he said: "The second half was very poor from our point of view, and I can't argue with the result. We just weren't good enough on the night."
