JAY Welsh was the hero for Hatfield Town last night (Tuesday) as he scored twice in his side’s 2-1 FA Cup Preliminary Round replay win away at Enfield 1893.

The home side, who play in the Essex Senior League Premier Division, did themselves no favours when they were reduced to 10 men after 20 minutes, with a defender sent off for hauling down Jason Caswell, deemed to be the last man.

In dramatic fashion, Welsh levelled things up in the 91st minute after Taffazel Islam had put the hosts 1-0 up with 18 minutes left of normal time.

That strike sent the game into extra-time, and in the sixth minute of that period, that man again Welsh netted to put the visitors 2-1 up.

That took centre-back Welsh’s personal haul in these two Preliminary Round ties against Enfield to three, as he scored the equaliser in the first game at the Gosling Stadium.

Both sides continued to have chances, but in the end it was The Blueboys who prevailed, and will travel to take on Barton Rovers in the First Round Qualifying, scheduled for Saturday, September 17.
