IAIN Dowie has been named as the new boss of Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

The Hatfield-born former Onslow School pupil has taken over their reins at Loftus Road following the departure of former manager Luigi De Canio.

Dowie, who was also a student at the old Hatfield Polytechnic, has previous played for and was briefly caretaker manager of the London club, now owned by F1 chiefs Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore.

Before his playing career took off, striker Dowie worked in Hatfield as a missile engineer at the British Aerospace site.

When he became a professional, he had a host of teams including Luton Town, West Ham United, Southampton and Crystal Palace. He was also a Northern Ireland international.

As a manager, he has already had spells with Palace, Oldham Athletic, Charlton Athletic and Coventry City.
