Defeat on the road for Welwyn Garden City

THE Citizens fell to 2-0 defeat away at Ampthill Town in the SSML Division One on Saturday.
The visitors offered little in the first period and were fortunate not to concede a penalty after a push in the area.
It was also only thanks to a solid defensive display, notably by centre-backs Simon Chang and Tony Gotobed, that the score remained goalless at the break.
After harsh words from the management at half-time, City did improve early in the second half.
Ampthill went ahead as Tyrone Taylor nodded over keeper Joe Croft and in.
However, City complained about the goal as Croft was tripped as he tried to scramble back to goal to clear the ball, but the goal stood. At the other end WGC striker Joe Brunt had an effort saved.
The result was sealed with 20 minutes to go as WGC failed to properly clear a corner and as a shot came in Bradley Jenner sliced into his own net.
It did appear that City pulled a goal back soon afterwards as Tommy Kiernan’s free-kick was headed into the top corner by substitute Billy Dean.
However, the referee ruled out the goal for a foul in the area.
Boss Simon Braine said: “It wasn’t really until the second half when we were 2-0 down that we started to play, but by then it was far too late.”
WGC will be hoping for an improvement tomorrow (Wednesday), as they host Wodson Park in the league, kick-off 7.45pm.
