A NEW 5-a-side football competition is spreading its wings into Hatfield after being named as the FA Competition Provider of the Year.

Pitch Invasion is an international five and six-a-side football organisation, and has had success based at the Gosling Sports Centre in WGC for the past eight years.

The business has proved so popular that the organiser is opening a new Summer League at the Hatfield Football Academy for ages 16 plus, based in College Lane.

Chris Parsons, marketing co-ordinator of Pitch Invasion said: "We have lots of leagues all over the country, and following the successes of the competition based at Gosling, we wanted to extend it further in the area.

"Also having just won the FA award, we believe we are the best at running these leagues, we provide the entire framework, and even have qualified FA referees."

Pitch Invasion's unique format for five-a-side allows for a cleaner, more skilful, involved and exciting game than 11-a-side, with less stoppages and more goalmouth excitement.

It is also a great way to stay in shape. It has been calculated that a Pitch Invasion player will typically take 4,500 steps during a game - half the recommended daily amount in 36 minutes!

Even though five-a-side is still regarded by some as a relatively new sport, the Football Association has announced that it is the most popular team sport in England.

Recently five-a-side officially overtook 11-a-side as the most popular playing format.

The new league starts early next month, with matches taking place every Thursday between 8pm and 10pm.

Players and teams can still sign up for the action by telephoning 0870 241 2494 or visiting www.pitch-invasion.com

Any side signing up before the end of the month will receive a free team kit to look the part on match nights.
