PEARTREE Wanderers got 2008 off to a winning start with a 3-1 victory over Welwyn Campus in Division Three.

Wanderers edged themselves into a deserved lead midway through the first half following constant pressure.

Striker Lewis Kirkby controlled and fired left-footed into the roof of the net after good work by Lenny Hart and Dan Loo.

After the break substitute Leon Cumberbatch scored his first for the club when he tucked away a pass from fellow sub Ollie Rouse.

Campus pulled one back on the counter attack, but Wanderers soon restored the two-goal cushion.

Rouse was held back by the keeper in the area after he had dropped the ball.

The referee had no option but to point to the penalty spot.

Mark Hemmings squeezed the kick under the diving keeper, who was unlucky not to keep it out.

Victory leaves third-placed Peartree just two points away from league leaders Hatfield Sports.
