GOALS from prolific striker Jax Bryceland and Jade Ryan helped Sherrardswood Ladies to a 2-0 home victory against Bedford on Sunday.
With all the other matches in the Beds & Herts League called off due to waterlogged pitches, Sherrardswood needed to make the game in hand count.
Wet and muddy conditions set the tempo for the start, which was understandably slow.
Bedford had some excellent chances and keeper Paula Collis pulled off some superb saves.
One in particular saw her dive to the far corner, stopping the ball going into the top-left of the net.
The best chance in the first half for the hosts came from striker Maggie Hall.
After picking the ball up from just inside the Bedford half, she out-sprinted both defenders and tried to chip the keeper.
Her effort was saved by the visiting stopper, who dived the right way to save.
The second period saw Sherrardswood push on and create chances for Katie Jones and Kristie Donovan.
But the deadlock was broken once again by goal-scoring machine Jax Bryceland.
The forward picked up a miskick from the Bedford defender and ran almost half the length of the pitch.
She was left one-on-one with the keeper and in trademark fashion slotted the ball in the right-hand corner of the goal for her 11th of the season.
Bedford started to panic after the goal and this left gaping holes in their midfield.
Sherrardswood took advantage of this with some attacking runs by Sue Hart and Emily Davey on the wings.
They provided some excellent balls into the penalty box and constant pressure led to the second.
Ryan collected possession just outside the six-yard box, then turned and fired into the net.
Fresh legs in the shape of defender Andi Herbert, midfielder Naomi Totten and striker Jules Comerford came on for the hosts.
Comerford was straight into the action with a run at the Bedford defence and a strike at goal which was only just blocked.
Man of the match was awarded to midfielder Kristie Donovan.
SLFC's next match is away to Hitchin Hearts.
