WELWYN Garden City duo Kelly Smith and Alex Scott will take on Barcelona with Arsenal Ladies in the Women’s Champions League next month.

The Gunners, who won the tournament in 2007, face their Spanish counterparts over two legs in the last 32 of the competition.

While names such as Lionel Messi, David Villa and Xavi roll off the tongue when talking about the men’s team from the Camp Nou, the ladies’ side are somewhat of an unknown quality, even for The Gunners’ Smith.

The 33-year-old, who played for Team GB in the Olympic Games, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I don’t know too much about them, I’m looking forward to going to the city, but I’ve never played against them before.”

Arsenal will travel to Spain for the first leg on September 26 or 27 with the return leg taking place in England on October 3 or 4.

Of the Champons League campaign, Smith added: “We really want to do well in the tournament, it’s different to the league and cup and we obviously come up against different opposition.”

Smith and Scott play their first home game with Arsenal Ladies since the Olympic Games on Thursday against Bristol Academy at Boreham Wood FC, kick-off 7.45pm. Tickets will be available on the gate, £5 for adults and £2.50 concessions.

A free football festival will be held pre-match, with Arsenal’s Olympic stars combining with qualified coaches to run a session for children of all abilities aged 7-12 from 4.30-7pm.
