Great Britain made a winning start in their opening match of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group I competition by beating Latvia 2-1 yesterday [Wednesday].

The GB team of Potters Bar’s Tara Moore, Heather Watson, Johanna Konta and Jocelyn Rae, in for the injured Laura Robson, will now face Romania on Friday.

Singles wins for Watson and Konta gave GB, captained by Judy Murray, an unassailable 2-0 lead over Latvia at the Syma Event and Conference Centre in Budapest, Hungary making the doubles match, which Latvia won, a dead rubber.

Watson had beaten 16-year-old Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1, with Konta defeating Diana Marcinkevica 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

GB, represented by Watson and Rae, were beaten in the doubles 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 by Marcinkevica and Ostapenko, but secured the 2-1 group win.

Hertfordshire’s Moore was an unused squad member in the opening encounter.

On Friday GB take on group favourites Romania, with the final group match on Saturday against host nation Hungary.

The competition format sees 16 teams contest the tie, with each nation in a round-robin group of four.

On Sunday, each nation will play-off for their final position within the tie and the winning nations from each of the four groups play-off to decide the top two.

Those two will then advance to the World Group II Play-Offs in April.
