LEWIS Hamilton made a flying start to today's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old McLaren Mercedes flier from Tewin started the fourth round of the world championship from fifth on the grid.

But the Herts-born F1 world champion made a storming start in the scorching heat of the desert and overtook Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button in the Brawn in the race to the first corner thanks to his car's KERS.

That elevated him to third place, but Brawn GP's Button managed to take back third place with a superb piece of braking after jostling for position with Hamilton.

The Toyota's of Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli lead after 10 laps.

Hamilton is now 12 seconds behind the leaders.
