WORLD champion Lewis Hamilton completed a much-improved day's racing by finishing second in this afternoon's practice session ahead of Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.

Earlier, Herts race-ace Hamilton finished in third place in the morning runout, and he will be delighted that in the second circuit he managed to go one better.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes man Lewis posted a time of 1 minute 15.445 seconds to come in 0.202 secs behind Williams driver Nico Rosberg who took top-spot.

However, to some, despite Hamilton's well documented on-track problems this season, his performance will have come as no surprise.

Last year Lewis, whose family live in Tewin, took the chequered flag at the Circuit de Monaco with an accomplished drive.

The 24-year-old himself is a big fan of the Monte Carlo track.

He said: "Monaco is my favourite circuit. The sensation you get from racing up the hill at 175mph, trying to make as straight a line as possible between the barriers while just shaving them with the walls of the tyres is unbelievable - the best sensation you could ever have in a Formula 1 car."

Attention will now turn to Saturday, where the drivers have one more practice session before qualifying takes centre stage.
