The 27-year-old Vodafone McLaren Mercedes motor racer from Hertfordshire was third quickest in qualifying at Yeongam as Red Bull secured another front row lock-out following the team’s feat in Japan.

Aussie Webber snatched pole in Q3 and Sebastian Vettel will line-up alongside him in Korea after clocking the second fastest lap time.

However, the reigning F1 world champion from Germany had looked a certainty for pole but was held up.

Hamilton took the fight to the Red Bulls in Q3 and will go from third on the starting grid, with Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari alongside him on the second row. Hamilton’s lap of 1m 37.469s was his best of the weekend.

Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen will start just behind them in fifth place, with Felipe Massa sixth and Roman Grosjean seventh in the provisional qualifying results.

McLaren star Jenson Button failed to make the top 10 shoot-out, qualifying only 11th. Fellow Brit Paul di Resta was another Q2 casualty, as was Sergio Perez, who will replace Stevenage-born Hamilton in the McLaren seat next season.

Vettel dominated Q2 ahead of Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, Raikkonen and Massa.

Hamilton’s best time in Q2 was a 1m 38.000s while Button, in 11th, clocked 1m 38.441s.

Double world champion Vettel had also gone fastest in Q1, with Webber second on the timesheets.

Hamilton just avoided the drop and scraped through by three-tenths of a second with the 17th best time. Championship leader Alonso was 16th on the super-soft tyres.

The 2012 Grand Prix of Korea starts at 7am UK time.
