The 26-year-old Vodafone McLaren Mercedes star set the pace in Singapore during a truncated practice session cut short by repairs to the Marina Bay street circuit.

Herts-born Hamilton clocked a lap time of 1m 48.599s to finish ahead of the Red Bulls of reigning F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was fourth on the timesheets, with Hamilton’s McLaren colleague Jenson Button fifth on a 1m 50.952s.

Practice was delayed today (Friday) while damaged kerbs were pulled up and removed from the circuit and the first session was cut to 60 minutes in length, rather than the usual 90 minutes.
