CALEB Hughes won 1,500m bronze for the British Gas GBR Swimming team on the second day of the 2013 European Junior Swimming Championships in Poznan, Poland.

The Hatfield Swimming Club ace touched home third in the fastest heat of the 1,500m Freestyle.

In a time of 15mins 19.63secs, Hughes smashed his previous best by more than 10 seconds to seal his spot on the podium.

“I’m really happy with the bronze and especially the time.” said the 17-year old.

“I wasn’t expecting to swim quite that well today.”

Hughes trains at the Herts Sports Village and was formerly coached by Nick Juba.

After Juba’s departure to coach the Danish national side, Hatfield appointed Ian Wright as his replacement.

And Hughes praised Wright’s influence.

He added: “My training has been a little up and down, but my new coach Ian Wright has been great and told me before I came that I could medal; I’m really pleased.”

Potters Bar swimmer Joel Knight, who attends Millfield, touched just outside his 1,500m personal best finishing eighth in a time of 15mins 30.17secs.
