WELWYN Garden City athlete Jodie Williams, and her Herts Phoenix club-mate Laura Wake, have both been named in the 32-strong Aviva GB&NI team which will travel to Paris for the European Indoor Championships to be held next month.

The 17-year-old claimed her first senior title by winning the senior ladies 60m at the Aviva UK Indoors Championships earlier this month.

Of her inclusion in the GB squad Williams, the 100m world junior champion, said: “I’m really excited to be in the team, my hard work through the winter has paid off.

“Taking the step up to seniors is quite scary, it’s going to be a good experience and a learning curve but I feel like I’m ready.“

Williams is to be joined in the squad by Laura Wake who is set to feature in the 4x400m relay team.

Herts Phoenix spokesman Jon Humphries, said: “The club is extremely proud that two of its junior internationals have progressed into the senior ranks whilst still in their teens.

“We wish them all the best and know that they will inspire others at the club to follow in their footsteps.

“We will watch the championships eagerly and know that they will represent the club well and enjoy the privilege of wearing the GB vest that is such a fantastic reward for all their efforts.”
