European Athletics U23 Championship golds for Williams and Tobais

WELWYN Garden City’s Jodie Williams and the University of Hertfordshire’s Deji Tobais both tasted sprint gold glory at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Finland over the weekend.

Herts Phoenix ace Williams won the 200m final on Saturday in a season’s best time of 22.92secs.

At the championships the 19-year-old also won silver in the 100m clocking 11.42secs behind Dafne Schippers of Holland in 11.13secs, Williams’ third medal came after leading the GB&I 4x100m team of Annie Tagoe, Corinne Humphreys and Rachel Johncock home in 43.83secs taking silver, Germany won gold in 43.29secs.

Tobais ran a brilliant first leg for the GB&I men’s 4x100m team as they set a championship record of 38.77secs in winning gold.

Slick changeovers followed and a storming final straight from 100m champion Adam Gemili saw the GB quartet snatch gold in dramatic fashion from their Polish rivals.

It was a super finish to the championships for Tobais who also won 100m silver, behind Gemili, on Friday in a time of 10.29secs.
