European Athletics U23 Championship 100m silvers for Williams and Tobais

WELWYN Garden City’s Jodie Williams and the University of Hertfordshire’s Deji Tobais both won 100m silver medals at the European Athletics U23 Champonships in Tampere, Finland. on Friday.

Williams, of Herts Phoenix Athletics Club, clocked 11.42secs to take the runners-up spot behind winner Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers.

Williams said: “I’m happy with it, I would have loved to have come here and won, but after the year I had last year [suffering from injury] I’m just happy to be able to come out here and compete really and to get a silver medal is really good.

“It was much better executed than my semi-final, I got a much better start, the execution was great, but Dafne was just the better athlete today.”

The men’s 100m saw a one-two for Great Britain.

Olympian Adam Gemili won gold in 10.20secs with the University of Hertfordshire’s Tobais just behind him in 10.29secs.

After securing his medal, Tobais said: “It’s a silver medal I can’t complain, it would have been better if I’d have executed the race as I’d wanted to, but I’ll take silver anyway.

“I’m happy that I can compete with Adam as he’s a great athlete and a great competitor.”
