ENGLAND and Sussex cricketer Monty Panesar, who was called up for the Ashes 2010 tour in Australia this week, will be in Potters Bar next month for the official opening of a school’s new sports pavilion.
The left-arm spinner, who has played in 39 Test matches, will unveil the 200,000 structure at Dame Alice Owen’s School in Dugdale Hill Lane, following the end of this year’s cricket season.
The ceremony will take place at 10.30am on Monday, October 4. The brick building, which will feature a disabled toilet and a small tea room, has been built as a replacement for the previous pavilion which was destroyed by arsonists in February 2009.
Born in Luton in April 1982, Panesar rose to prominence at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club after making his first class debut in 2001.
He has subsequently taken 126 wickets in 39 Tests for England since making his bow against India in March 2006.
Known affectionately as the Sikh of Tweak, the finger spinner has also taken 24 wickets in 26 One Day International games.
