HERTS golfer Charlie Douglass is just three shots off the lead after the first round of the Spanish women's open amateur championship in Gran Canaria.
The Brocket Hall member shot a one-under par 70, which included four birdies that put her in fourth place at the halfway stage of the strokeplay qualifying.
After the second round, at Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, the top 32 players go forward to the matchplay stages.
The 19-year-old from the Welwyn-based club clearly enjoys golf in Spain.
She went into this tournament fresh from two wins at the recent Hacienda del Alamo Women's Festival.
Charlie claimed victory in both the Murcia Ladies Open and the Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open.
Cambridgeshire's Sarah Attwood, of the Gog Magog club, is well placed after returning 75 to share 23rd place.
English champion Hannah Barwood of Knowle was one shot worse and is tied 29th while her Gloucestershire colleague, Sian James from Bristol & Clifton, scored 77 and is lying 37th.
However, Minchinhampton's Charlotte Ellis will be disappointed after she opened with 81, which left her in a share of 73rd place.
The tournament leader is Germany's Nicola Rossler who scored four-under par 67.
