This annual event for nine to 13-year-olds consists of separate boys' and girls' competitions and is keenly contested by clubs throughout the county.

Sean Bailey, Hatfield's junior section coach, explained the format of the event.

"Teams compete over 50 metre sprints in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, as well as a 100 metre individual medley race, a 4 x 50m freestyle relay and finally a 4 x 50m medley relay."

Both the Hatfield boys' and girls' teams duly demonstrated the growing strength of the club's junior section by winning their respective competitions.

The gala opened with Lydia Smith winning the girls' 100m individual medley in a time of 1 minute 13.64 seconds.

Ricky Jones followed this by winning the boys' 100m individual medley in a time of 1 minute 8.06 seconds.

Sian Lockett secured second place in the girls' 50m backstroke with a time of 34.70 seconds and Dacre Capstick won the boys' 50m event in 30.04 seconds.

India Hammond's time of 42.04 seconds secured sixth place in the girls' 50m breaststroke, with Luke

Target winning the boys' 50m equivalent in 35.49 seconds.

Charlotte Claridge took the girls' 50m butterfly with a time of 31.69 seconds and Liam Doonan was fourth in his butterfly race with a time of 35.15 seconds.

Georgina Hodges also came sixth in the girls' 50m freestyle in 33.07 seconds and Tom Worbey finished runner-up in the boys' 50m freestyle with 30.49 seconds.

With the individual events over, Hatfield's swimmers turned their electric pace to the relays.

The girls' quartet of Charlotte Claridge, Lydia Smith, Sian Lockett and Rebecca Pritchard won the 4x50m freestyle relay in 2 mins 1.79 secs, as well as the 4 x 50m medley race in 2 mins 18.31 secs.

Not to be outdone, the boys' team of Dacre Capstick, Ricky Jones, Tom Worbey and Liam Doonan won the 4x50m freestyle relay in 1 min 54.71 secs, as well as the 4x50m medley relay in 2 mins 7.74 secs In winning, Hatfield's girls beat off the challenge of 23 other teams from the county.

The club's boys emerged victorious from a field of 19 teams.

Hatfield coach Bailey praised the club's swimmers after their wins.

He said: "This was a superb display by our boys and girls against some of the best sprint teams in Hertfordshire.

"The Daplyn is a fast-moving, high-adrenaline event and our swimmers clearly got a great buzz from taking part in it.

"Congratulations to both teams for their excellent performances." Highlighting the club's ambitions, he added: "We are now developing a junior section which we hope will emulate the successes of the club's senior swimmers.

"The Daplyn gave us a great opportunity to measure the progress our swimmers are making in this respect.
