BOWLERS from Potters Bar and Hatfield were in the District side that was defeated in their first St Albans & District Shield match.

This is the District's 50th anniversary year and they are to play matches against all 16 affiliated clubs.

Last Wednesday they played the first of the Shield fixtures against Townsend Bowls Club, which is district president Alan Brittain's home team.

Although winning on three of the five rinks, they lost the game by eight shots.

The best of the District rinks was that of Harpenden's John Millins, Ray Martin of Hatfield, Potters Bar's Graham Marriner and skip Gordon Price, of Shire Park. The four won by 25 shots to 17.

Other winning rinks included Alan Turner, Tony Parsonage, Richard Pearce and skip Les Roberts 18-13 and Alan Brittain, Eamon Roberts, Ron Golden and skip Derek Batchelor 25-21.

Those that lost included Eric Marriner, Derek Faulkner, Rick Catchpole and skip Terry Barker, who were beaten 21-26, and Martin Wood, Peter Bennett, Derek Goodman and skip Ron Smith, who were defeated 40-20 on shots.
