WELWYN & District Bowls Club has a new president. Diana Barrett was elected to the post at the Ottway Walk club's annual general meeting held on Saturday.

She takes over as president following the retirement of Gerald Papworth MBE, who had held office for 10 years.

He presented the bowls club, the EBA's Club of the Year in 2006, with a beautiful presidential silver chain in memory of his wife Audrey, who died three years ago and was a former ladies' secretary of the club.

Diana, who has been a member of Welwyn & District for nearly 20 years, was president of the St Albans & District Ladies' Bowling Association in 2000 and president of the Herts County Women's Bowling Association in 2004. David Humphreys was elected club chairman in succession to Andrew Barclay. Michael Poole was also appointed hon secretary, taking over from David Humphrey. The green ranger will be Tony Holdcroft, taking over the post from Robert Ducat- Brown.
