DATCHWORTH'S bowlers nearly came away from their Stevenage Mixed League match against Howard Gardens with maximum points.

The visitors won the Sunday afternoon clash 90 shots to 55 in Letchworth after taking all but one of the rinks.

They would have taken the lot had the rink of Clive Hodson-Smith, David Thompson, Doreen Hodson-Smith and skip David Wright not been beaten at the death.

They picked up the shot they needed to tie the scores 20-20 after 21 ends and were holding two shots on the extra end with only the skips to play.

The home skip, Ron Williams, managed to draw shot with his first wood and then the Datchworth skip could not better it, so the point for winning the rink went to the Letchworth side.

All Datchworth's other three rinks won, with that of Gill Parsley, Jim Russell, Steve Arnold and skip Brian Gilbert winning by a wide, yet somewhat undeserving margin of 34-6.

The standard of play of the home rink was not reflected in the final scoreline.
