Aljaz Bedene will face Latvian Ernests Gulbis in the US Open first round after the draw was made at Flushing Meadows this afternoon (Thursday).

The final major of the year, which begins in New York this Monday, provides a first-time meeting between the pair.

Bedene, who lives in Welwyn Garden City, has made one previous appearance in the main draw, losing to Russian Dmitry Tursonov in four sets in the opening round two years ago.

Gulbis has plenty of grand slam pedigree, having reached the semi-finals of last year’s French Open, but has slipped down the ATP world rankings of late.

Bedene currently sits at 58, nine places above his talented opponent.
