HATFIELD boxer Billy Joe Saunders has made a successful start to his Olympic Games medal quest in Beijing.

HATFIELD boxer Billy Joe Saunders has made a successful start to his Olympic Games medal quest in Beijing.

The Team GB welterweight from Herts beat Turkey's Adem Kilicci, a bronze medallist at the 2007 World Championships, in his opening bout at the Workers' Gymnasium.

Saunders, who lives on a travellers' site in Hatfield, won every round of the contest for a 14-3 victory over the Turk.

He will now face Cuban Carlos Banteaux Suarez in the last 16 of the 69kg division on Thursday, August 14.
