POTTERS Bar’s Ryan McCarthy scooped a silver medal alongside men’s doubles partner Tom Wolfenden at the Commonwealth Youth Games at the weekend.

McCarthy, aged 18, and Wolfenden were beaten to gold in the final by Malaysian duo Nelson Heg and Ee yi Teo who claimed a 2-0 (24-22, 21-16) victory and did not drop a game in the tournament.

The English pair began the men’s doubles by claiming a 2-0 (21-4, 21-5) round of 16 triumph over Naunta Peniaga and Mikaere Ramuz of Kiribati.

Their quarter-final clash with Malaysians Joo Ven Soong and Zulfadli Zulkiffli ended prematurely due to an injury to one of the Malaysian players.

This put the English duo into the semi-final stage and they booked their final spot by coming from a game down to triumph 2-1 (21-8, 14-21, 20-22) over Indian opponents Srikanth Nammalwar Kidambi and Hema Nagendra Badu Thandarang.

That guarenteed them a place on the podium where they were to collect silver after the final against the Malaysian winners.

McCarthy, a former Chancellor’s School pupil, also went close to winning a medal in the mixed doubles.

He and Emily Westwood were losing semi-finalists and so entered into the bronze medal match, however they fell to a 2-0 (14-21, 10-21) defeat to Malaysian pair Nelson Heg and Meng yean Lee.
