WELWYN & District Bowls Club's annual summer Open Gala was won by Cheshunt Varmints.

The 2008 champions were Ann Padgham, Margaret Knight, Vic Knight and Roy Padgham.

They lifted the shield and collected prize money for their achievement.

Runners-up of the gala were the Likely Lads, who were made up from P Sullivan, P Ottley, F Greenham and W Karn.

Behind them in third spot was Jim's Lot.

Gloria Medcalf, B McCarthy, Joan James and G Smith were handed prizes for coming in the bronze medal position.

The competition attracted a total of 24 teams from across Hertfordshire and even some from neighbouring counties.

On booking in the competitors were handed a free bacon buttie and tea or coffee.

As well as the bowling action, there was plenty for players and spectators to keep them entertained at the club.

They were able to visit stalls for tombola, bric-a-brac, bottles, various games, and to purchase bowls clothing or a raffle ticket.

A tea and coffee stall with cakes and pastries was open all day, while more than a hundred meals were served from the kitchen at lunchtime.
