TWO Hatfield swimmers took part in the South African Open Water Championships in Cape Town.

Teenager Richard Charlesworth finished the 10km endurance swim at the Ashanti Dam in third place earlier this month.

Charlesworth, who is based at the British Offshore Centre on the Gold Coast in Australia, took part independently to test himself in the open water endurance event.

The teenage swimmer recorded a time of 1 hour 56 minutes 59 seconds for the race.

Brits took the first three places as Charlesworth finished behind winner and British 2004 Olympic 1,500m bronze medallist David Davies and runner-up Alan Bircher.

Charlesworth struck gold at the European Junior Open Water Championships in Milan last year.

University of Hertfordshire student and Hatfield Swimming Club member Bret Ferguson also competed in the race, but as part of the British squad.

The team used the South African competition to be selected for the FINA World Open Water Championships in May.

At that event the swimmers will try to qualify for the Beijing Olympics with a top 10 finish.
