FORMER Queenswood schoolgirl Naomi Cavaday lost to defending Wimbledon champion Venus Williams on Centre Court in the first round earlier today (Tuesday).

Left-hander Cavaday, who had a tennis scholarship at the Brookmans Park school, lost in straight sets but made the four times Wimbledon winner work for her victory.

The 19-year-old Brit wild card, who is ranked 197th in the world, took the first set to a tie-break, having led at one stage 3-1.

Cavaday, who has also played for Gosling Ladies in the National Club League, was eventually beaten by the American powerhouse 7-6, 6-1.

It is the second Wimbledon in a row that Cavaday has been knocked out by a big name in the sport.

Last year Swiss miss Martina Hingis, another former Wimbledon champ and ex-world number one, dispatched Cavaday in the first round.
