GOLD medals were won at the World Canoe Polo Championships in Canada by members of a Potters Bar-based club.

Competitors from the St Albans and Hertsmere Canoe Club, who train at the Potters Bar swimming pool, were picked for the GB squad that flew to Edmonton.

In the women's event Pip Grayson, Ceri Winter and Ginny Coyles from the St Albans and Hertsmere Canoe Club put on their GB colours.

They fought their way to the semi-finals, where they beat New Zealand 3-2.

GB defeated Germany 4-3 in the final to win gold.

Alan Vessey from Potters Bar was the men's team captain.

His side suffered defeats against Germany and France in the early rounds and missed out on the semi-finals on goal difference.

Nevertheless, they still managed sixth place overall from 24 competing nations.

Ed Feltham, who lives near Hatfield, represented GB in the Under-21 competition.

His team won 5-4 over Germany and continued the early rounds without losing.

A 3-1 semi-final success against Germany put them in the final where they won gold after beating France with an extra time golden goal.
