BILLY Joe Saunders has been found guilty of bringing amateur boxing into disrepute and fined £250 at a disciplinary hearing held in London yesterday (Wednesday).

Saunders, who had received a letter notifying him of a suspension on his return from the Beijing Olympics, has escaped a ban and is free to return to training with the GB team.

The letter related to an incident which occurred some months prior to the Games concerning allegations of lewd behaviour at a GB boxing training camp in France.

The hearing lasted four hours, after which members of the ABA decided on the appropriate punishment for what was decided to be a 'minor affair'.

The 19-year-old Hatfield welterweight was represented at the hearing by his sports agent Howard Green and Team GB head boxing coach Terry Edwards, who gave Saunders a glowing character reference.

Saunders will now be hoping to put the matter behind him and get on with what he does best - boxing!
