Hatfield’s European, British and Commonwealth middleweight boxing champion Billy Joe Saunders is expected to take on Andy Lee for the WBO world title.

Irishman Lee won the vacant belt on Saturday in Las Vegas after stopping the much-fancied Russian Matt Korobov in the sixth round.

In doing so, Lee became the first traveller to secure a world title, a feat Saunders had wanted to achieve.

Saunders is the mandatory challenger for the crown having beaten Chris Eubank Jnr last month on a split points decision at London’s ExCeL Arena.

Lee and Saunders could meet at the end of February on a show being planned at the 02 Arena in London.
