Aimee Braithwaite won gold for University of Hertfordshire at the BUCS Championship at Staffordshire University.

Fighting in the U48kg girls’ category, Braithwaite, along with Mohammed Shohib (U60kg boys) who was beaten in the quarter-final stage, were the university’s first-ever competitors at the event.

Braithwaite was in fine form and defeated her Oxford opponent in the final to take the title.

The victor was always on top, hitting her opponent at will leading to a standing count in first round.

Braithwaite continued to press in the second round and in the final round, following a long-range rear-hand shot, the referee had seen enough and stopped the contest.

Coach Paul Cook told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It was a fantastic performance from Aimee.

“I will now aim to get Aimee another fight at end of April as preparation for Europe’s biggest tournament, the Haringey Cup, at Alexandra Palace in June.”
