Hatfield European middleweight boxing champion Billy Joe Saunders will not fight on the May 9 show at SSE Arena, Wembley as previous planned.

Saunders had been set to jointly headline the card with domestic rival Chris Eubank Jnr in separate fights.

It was then hoped Saunders would fight WBO world champion Andy Lee for his title later in the year.

However, WBO president Paco Valcarcel has announced that due to injury Lee will not be able to defend his belt this summer against Saunders, the number one challenger.

Saunders is now set to fight for the WBO Interim World Middleweight title while he waits for Lee to recover from a damaged shoulder.

A re-match with Eubank Jr, who Saunders beat on a unanimous points decision in November, for that interim title is being negotiated.

The WBO have also stated that terms for a Saunders-Eubank rematch are to be agreed in the next 48 hours or Saunders will challenge for the title against an approved WBO ranked challenger.

The May 9 show will go ahead with Frank Buglioni, Bradley Skeete and former Welwyn Garden City Boxing Club fighter Mitchell Smith all in championship title action. Smith will challenge Christian Palma for the vacant WBO Intercontinental Featherweight title.

Tickets for the May 9 show are priced at £40, £50, £75, £100 and £200 are available from Eventim on 0844 249 1000 or and SSE Arena, Wembley, on 0844 815 0815 or (Disabled Line 0208 782 5629).

BoxNation will televise live and exclusive on Sky 437/HD 490, Virgin 546 and Talk Talk 525. Subscribe at or watch online at and via iPhone, iPad or Android.
