THE Beijing Olympic medal dream is over for Hatfield boxer Billy Joe Saunders.

Welterweight fighter Saunders was defeated on points by Cuban Carlos Banteaux Suarez in the second round of the competition.

Saunders fought bravely against his opponent, but was undone in the end by the experience of Pan-American champion Suarez.

He trailed from the start, eventually losing 13-6 to Banteaux who will face Egypt's Hosam Abdin in the next round.

The defeat may come as a surprise to some, as Saunders defeated Suarez in a bout in January, on countback.

Questions are bound to be asked once again regarding the consistency of the judges' scoring, after some good body shots from the Hoddesdon Boxing Academy product were not scored.

Saunders, the first Romany to fight at an Olympic Games, must now decide whether to ignore the megabucks of the professional game to concentrate on London 2012.

If he does fight at the Games on his home soil in four years time he will surely be a gold-medal favourite.
