Aljaz Bedene could not follow up his stunning win over world number 11 Gilles Simon on Tuesday as he lost in straight sets to Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina.

Having seen off Frenchman Simon over three sets in the second round, the British number two, who lives in Welwyn Garden City, could not match that intensity against his second French opponent of the week.

Qualifier Herbert raced to the opening set 6-3 and with Bedene struggling to find rhythm, he lost the second 6-0 to exit the tournament at the round of 16 stage.

The world number 58 will know the identity of his first round opponent at the US Open at 4pm (BST) today (Thursday) when the draw is revealed.

Bedene has reached the main draw at Flushing Meadows just once before, losing in four sets to big-hitting Russian Dmirty Tursonov two years ago.
