World number five Alison Waters booked her place in squash’s US Open second round courtesy of a scrappy 3-2 victory over compatriot Victoria Lust in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Their 55-minute squash battle was blighted with errors from the off as both players struggled to find any real momentum or rhythm in the match.

It was Welwyn Garden City’s Waters who finally looked to have settled into the match in the fourth game when she quickly found herself with five match balls in hand.

But a series of errors along with some sublime finishing from Lust saw her lead eradicated and it was the younger English woman who took the game and the momentum into the decider. However, it was Waters who eventually sealed the match 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 10-12, 11-7.

Following the narrow victory, Waters said: “She played really well in the first two and a half games.

“She was probably the better player today and deserved to win that match, but I’ll take it.”
