Welwyn United Ladies opened their campaign with a point away to Caddington Ladies on Sunday.
This is Caddington’s first ladies campaign and the young team came out confident.
Welwyn made a shaky start, conceding twice in the opening 20 minutes before settling.
Welwyn grew dominant, with Mia Jager hitting the crossbar before Ava Rawlins saw her effort bounce down and out off it.
Welwyn’s hard work paid off when Ewelina Hinc played Jager through and she beat the keeper to make it 2-1.
Welwyn pushed for an equaliser after the break, but Jager’s finish from Lillie Cole’s pass was ruled offside.
Welwyn kept battling for an equaliser before Rawlins’ cross fell to debutant Lillie Cole, who volleyed past the keeper.
Welwyn kept up the pressure, but Caddington’s keeper raced off her line to deny Rebecca Sanders in front of goal.
Welwyn’s defence stood firm, with Sian Appleyard controlling the left side of the pitch.
A chance fell to Caddington when the ball then went through the Welwyn midfield and defence, leaving the Caddington striker one on one with the Welwyn keeper, Claudia Cowap-Whiskin came a lightening pace across the player to stop the Caddington threat.
It was a hard-fought battle for Welwyn United Ladies, who face another young Kempston side at home on Sunday, September 13.
