Welwyn Garden City FC: Play suspended after incident at away ground

Play was suspended and a player was shown a straight red card after an incident in the terraces at Welwyn Garden City FC's visit to Marlow.

The match, a Southern League - Central Division clash on Saturday, November 1, which ended 3-2 to the home side, was suspended for 20 minutes just before half time, following a reported fight between supporters in the crowd.

Players were said to have got involved in the incident, and as a result, Welwyn Garden City midfielder Tom Bruno was shown a straight red card by referee Jake Hillier.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Marlow FC described what happened as a "minor incident" that "occurred between two individuals following persistent verbal abuse of the Marlow goalkeeper".

The statement continued: "The incident was dealt with and one of those individuals left the ground promptly of their own volition.

"The other was subsequently removed from the ground.

"The referee requested that Welwyn supporters were segregated and the match was delayed by 20 minutes while this was implemented.

"One Welwyn player received a red card during the incident.

"Neither of the individuals have attended Marlow matches before.

"The referee will submit his report and the club will make no further statement at this time."

Welwyn Garden City FC has also been contacted for comment.
