The Herts Senior Cup final between Potters Bar Town and Hemel Hempstead Town turned into a farce without a ball being kicked - as Mother Nature intervened.
A heavy downpour, which at its peak lasted for a good 15 minutes, left the venue at Hitchin Town's Top Field pitch under water in several areas as the amount of rain that fell could not permeate the hard ground.
It did start to seep through once the deluge had stopped and players had even come out to start their warm-up.
But with the puddles rapidly and visibly disappearing, the decision was made at 7.17pm to call it off.
Potters Bar boss Max Mitchell explained what had happened for his point of view.
"It was a little bit of a whirlwind but when we arrived, the pitch was OK," he said.
"Then there was a massive downpour and it was obviously flooded. There's areas that are not conducive to football, the ball doesn't roll so the officials made a decision to call the game off.
"Hopefully we can arrange it before the season finishes."
Both he and counterpart Lee Allinson were seen in conversation prior to the decision being made, and out checking the surface, and the Scholars boss confirmed that both managers wanted the game on, even if it meant a small delay to the kick-off.
Mitchell said: "Yeah, Lee and I were contemplating just letting it dry and maybe delaying the kick-off.
"We both wanted it on, I think both teams have really been looking forward to it because we haven't really got much to play for in our leagues.
"People are playing for pride at the moment, so we were looking forward to tonight because we felt that we had a game plan that could go and affect the result.
"In a cup final, it is sometimes who fancies it more on the day and we also wanted to bounce back from a disappointing loss on Saturday, although it was a good performance.
"[The wet pitch] would have suited us and it did have that cup shock vibe to it, rainy and horrible. It would have made it a bit of a leveller.
"But it was taken out of our hands so yeah, it’s disappointing."

That decision, Mitchell confirmed, ultimately fell to the matchday referee but with heavy input from the Hitchin Town ground staff and the Herts FA.
"It was between the referee and the Herts FA, although the referee wanted to give it a little bit of time," he said.
"To be fair to him, he came out a little bit later and we both went onto the pitch but there are areas where the ball is just not rolling.
"I think he was looking more at the injury side of things for players.
"They made the decision, we just have to deal with it."
While both clubs now have to wait for the Herts FA to come up with a decision on a rearranged date, the Scholars will turn their attention to two more Isthmian League Premier Division matches, the first against Bowers & Pitsea on Saturday and then at home to Hendon on Easter Monday.
"There’s still a lot to play for," said Mitchell. "We've got our highest points tally that that the club has ever got in this division to beat in the last three games.
"Hopefully we can achieve that small target."
