Garden City Runners put on a storming performance to extend their lead at the top of the Midweek Road Race League.

The Welwyn Garden City running club had held a narrow lead after round one in Stevenage, two points ahead of Ware Joggers.

And round two was hosted by the east Herts club but a superb turnout from GCR, and some wonderful results, has stretched their overall advantage in Division Two to 174 from new chasers, Dacorum.

The ladies were the stars of the show in Ware, winning the team competition for the round.

Jess Timmins was fourth while Martha Hall was eighth and Zoe Stephens rounded out the top10.

Caroline Hale (16th), Amber-Leigh Marvin (18th) and Lucy Iles (20th) also made the top 20 with Julia Wiper one place outside of it.

GCRs' men were third in their competition behind winners Dacorum and the home side.

Their top finisher, Bradley Birch, was also fourth overall, with Chris Baylis 14th and James Huish 17th.

So good was the turnout though that both the men and women were able to field enough for other scoring squads.

Both B teams were fifth on the night while the ladies C and D teams were seventh and 10th.

The men also had a third team in the top 10, the C team coming ninth.

Round three comes in Royston on June 4 while the fourth and final round is at Trent Park on June 27.

Nadine Dwyer took on the London 2 Brighton 100k Ultra Challenge, starting in Richmond's Old Deer Park and finishing at Brighton Racecourse.

She said: "This was my first 100k and without a doubt the hardest thing I've ever done.

"From Couch to 5k to a 100k ultra in three years - absolutely bonkers."

Kath Evans and Peter Jasko also took on an ultra although not as far.

They raced the Greensand Country 50k ultra round the Bedfordshire trails.

Evans said: "We started at Shuttleworth along a lovely route, superbly marked and marshalled, and apart from a few showers the weather was kind."

She finished in 7:22:18 while Jasko clocked 5:50:10

A slightly more sensible distance awaited Michael Germany and Katharine Farrell as they took on the Edinburgh Half Marathon.

Germany said: "The weather was not on our side with consistent rain and a head wind on the exposed coastal roads.

"However, despite the weather, we both managed to secure new half marathon PBs of 1:38:25 for myself and 1:39:52 for Katharine."

A total of 102 GCRs took on parkruns on Saturday morning.

The best result was a second place in the ladies' race at Stevenage for Caroline Hale but it wasn't the only good performance.

Sarah Durston was fifth lady at Sandringham in Norfolk and Barbara Kubis-Labiak was seventh at Letchworth, where Richard Somerset was 15th.

Jamie Rose was 10th at St Albans and Sean Bowen was 16th at Itchen Valley Country in Southampton.

The home run at Panshanger saw Hannah Frank fourth lady and Lucy Iles seventh while Steve Ellerd-Elliott was 16th overall and Philip Brooks 19th.

The club have also held their AGM with a change at the top.

Jane Molloy stepped down as chair after four years of sterling service and her vice, Louise Smith, also took a step back.

They have been replaced by Sean Bowen and Sidney Valentine as Chair with Michael Scutt moving into the role of secretary previously held by Bowen.
