Welwyn Garden City are facing up to an even larger fixture crisis after the ridiculously wet weather this winter meant another game was postponed.

The Citizens were due to go to Bedford Town on Sunday as they look to pull back one of their fixtures in hand in Southern League Division One Central.

Problems with the pitch at The Eyrie have shelved those plans for now, however, meaning WGC still have 13 games remaining to squeeze in before the end of the season on April 27.

A statement on the Bedford website said: "The drainage has collapsed on one southern section of the pitch in an area measuring 15 square metres.

"It is highly dangerous for players to run on or through this depression, therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we have had to postpone the Biggleswade FC game versus Barton Rovers [on Friday] along with our league game versus Welwyn Garden City this Sunday.

"Our groundsman Pete Watts has worked incredibly hard and spent many extra hours doing everything possible to attack this problem.

"The club has also had Beds Borough Council drainage and highway specialists out to inspect the issue and are awaiting a detailed report so they can act on the areas controlled outside of the ground that they are responsible for."

Welwyn have played just six times since the turn of the new year with their Herns Lane pitch also suffering under the rain, most recently on Tuesday when the game with Barton Rovers was postponed.

And any hopes they had about the league being extended a few weeks have been quoshed by the FA.

Leagues committee chairman Mark Frost said: "The season end date of April 27 is set and remains unchanged.

"All league matches affecting promotion / play off places and relegation must be completed by April 27.

"Play off matches have been set for finals concluded by Monday, May 6, taking into consideration the bank holiday weekend.

"We can allow matches that have no affect on promotion, play-off or relegation to be played no later than Saturday, May 4."

Welwyn are due back in action on Saturday when they host Kidlington and they should have a new player in their midst.

Charlie McDonald, 19, has moved on a month’s loan from National League South St Albans City.

McDonald, who can play either in central defence or midfield, had an earlier loan with Bedford Town terminated because of a lack of game time.

He will be with the Citizens until the end of March, but that could be extended until the end of the season.

McDonald is a former Queens Park Rangers academy product and joined Saints, his home town club, at the start of this season following his release from Loftus Road.

Two players who have gone out of the club in search of extra game time are Henry Jones and Vinnie Baker.

They have moved to Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Shefford Town & Campton on dual registration.

Speaking on Twitter, the SSML club said: "Baker, a versatile defender, made an impressive debut in our victory at Tring and Jones, a powerful and hardworking striker, joins in time for the game at Arlesey."
