Welwyn made it seven wins in a row as they defeated Ruislip at home in Counties One Herts Middlesex.

The sequence has lifted the Hobbs Way-based rugby club up to fifth in the table with the latest victory a 22-18, come-from-behind success.

Watched by a crowd into three figures, Ruislip scored first on a pitch that was harder than in recent weeks, a high tackle giving them an easy three.

It took Welwyn 25 minutes to get themselves on the scoreboard and it began with great work in the line-out.

They stole a defensive throw and drove over the line only to be held up by some excellent Ruislip defence.

But they attacked again and this time created a gap for Fin Sutherland to go over and score an unconverted try.

Another high tackle from the kick-off this time brought a yellow card, Tom Emery sent for a 10-minutes sit down, but it brought another three points, the kick coming from the initial offence.

The second half began with Ruislip a point to the good and both teams almost cancelling each other out.

Welwyn’s kicking out of hand was letting them down and Ruislip were using that to push the hosts back.

However, the game eventually burst into life.

Welwyn won a penalty on the opposition 22 and decided to opt for their dominant scrum.

And when the ball came out of there, Sutherland went in for his second, although yet again the conversion was missed.

Discipline was also costing Welwyn though and from another penalty, Ruislip were able to create an overlap and score.

A few minutes later another penalty gave them a shy at the posts and while that bounced back off the upright, Welwyn made a mess of trying to get it away from their line and conceding a scrum five metres out.

And even the strength of the home pack could not prevent the ball from coming out on the Ruislip side and the visitors scoring under the posts to take an 18-10 lead.

It was from here that the home side started to stir though.

A quick penalty made yards down the field before they were dragged down. Not retreating the required 10 yards brought another penalty and this was kicked to the corner.

Welwyn duly claimed that put-in and camped themselves on the Ruislip line, battering the opposition before Josh Walkey managed to go over under the posts.

That meant the conversion could be kicked easily and with 10 minutes to go, they trailed by just one point.

They got the ball back when Ruislip spilled in a central, attacking area.

Welwyn countered and excellent interplay saw Jake Riley take Welwyn into the opposition half.

And when the ball came out to the backs again, they managed to create a bit of space for Christian Salisbury to run into the corner, placing the ball over the line as he was tackled into touch.

The officials agreed that was what had happened and allowed the kick was missed, the final whistle sounded minutes later.

The bonus point secured, Welwyn will now turn their attentions to a derby game, away to Hitchin on Saturday.
