Potters Bar Bowls Club had the honour of hosting the quarter-finals of the Hertfordshire Ladies Senior Fours competition - although there was disappointment for the home heroes.

The quartet of Sue Powers, Diane Berry, Penney Billington and Diane Jewell battled hard but eventually went down 22-10 to Sawbridgeworth.

In the other games there were wins for Berkhamsted, Tring and Bishop's Stortford.

The quarter-final of the Bob Vise Cup was played at The Walk against Townsend, and it was the visitors who took the honours.

The triples team of Terry White, Peter Openshaw and Bob Maule gained a very hard-fought draw while the fours of Colin Malone, Paul Stevens, Jan Southwell and Steve Jewell picked up five shots on the last end to finish their game in a draw too.

However, defeats in the singles and pairs gave the tie to Townsend.

A team of Bar bowlers, and supporters, travelled to the south coast to take on Sussex club Rottingdean.

They received a warm welcome from the hosts and returned with a 103-86 win.

Shire Park (Tewin) had another busy week again.

In the Welwyn Hatfield League, the Greens had a very close match away to Parkside, losing by one shot, 33-32.

Mike Bridgeman, Andy Short and Paul Lohr was the winning rink with a 19-15 success.

The Yellows did slightly better, taking four points in the home match with Knebworth, thanks to a rink win for Aly Hamid, David Williams and Gus Edwards and a 38-27 victory overall.

In friendly action, they won on three of the five rinks at home to Harperbury but lost 96-91 overall.

The top rink was that of Alan Goddard, Bill Griffiths and Linda Draycott who had a 26-14 win.

They also lost 105-62 away to Rye Park, Karen Watts, Griffiths and Bill Draycott winning 17-8 on their rink.

However, they defeated Welwyn Garden City 79-73, with Hamid and Linda and Bill Draycott taking the top honours.

The run of Datchworth Bowls Club’s men in the County Team Ten competition came to an end away to Mill End.

They were beaten on three of the four disciplines with the only success coming in the singles as Mike Mahoney battled from behind to win 21-20.

The triples could have been key for Datchworth but they saw an 8-0 lead after five ends turned into a 22-16 defeat, Mill End winning eight of the remaining 13 ends.

An East Herts League Division Three match at home to Buntingford Bulls saw a 39-34 win for the Golds.

Jack Harper, Ian Williams and Terry Metcalf dropped a three on the last end to lose 20-19 but the 20-14 win for Dave Castle, Phil Berry and Ian Green was enough for Datchworth to take the victory.

They weren't so fortunate on Sunday in the Stevenage Mixed League as the short trip to Knebworth brought a home win overall and on all three rinks, 54-35 the final score.

The nearest they came to a rinks win was Daniel Williams, Anna Pattle, Julian Hales and Peter Hills who could only pick up a single shot on the final end and lost 14-13

There was another defeat in a midweek mixed friendly, going down 76-71 away to Welwyn Garden City.

The four rinks were shared with the Datchworth success for Steve Arnold, Jan Smith and skip Ian Green as well as Celia Gordon, Dave Castle and skip Keith Smith.
