Shire Park Bowls Club (Tewin) is becoming a popular place to hold events with another one this week.

Following on from a district game against London Scottish, the Tewin club saw a county trial for ladies.

They still found time to have their own matches and there was a close result in the Welwyn Hatfield Jubilee Cup against North Mymms, Park going down 31-29 after losing three shots on the final end in one of the two rinks.

Bill Griffiths, Elaine Wulcko, Dave Warner and Gus Edwards did win their rink though, 15-14 at home.

The first Welwyn Hatfield Bowls Tournament match against Northaw & Cuffley saw each team leave with four points.

Shire Park won by one shot on two rinks to give them 4 points, but lost heavily on the other.

There was also defeat in the East Herts Ranson Cup to Potters Bar.

There were mixed fortunes over the weekend too as Shire lost 52-43 to Much Hadham at home, Todd Canton, Ian Kirsch and Kevin Brazier the top rink, but they had a success against Welwyn & District, winning 82-59.

Karen and Alan Watts plus Bill Draycott took the honours this time.

Datchworth had a number of mixed friendlies as well with one win and a loss.

That was against Harperbury, 71-51, thanks to wins on three of the four rinks, the best of them from Jenny Holzbauer, Dickie Jackson and Derek Henley.

They did lose 86-85 to Potters Bar with Holzbauer, Howard Carrick, Terry Metcalf and Keith Smith the only victors, a whopping 35-7 success.

Luton Co-op won the other friendly 65-57 with Datchworth winning on two rinks, the best of them Nikie Berry, John Oliver and Steve Chamberlain.

The competitive action saw wins in three different events.

They beat Sele Farm 31-29 in the Welwyn Hatfield League, the decisive rink that of Jan Smith, Julian Hales and Chamberlain.

In the East Herts League, the Golds won 35-24 against Shire Park with Dave Castle, Ian Green and Terry Metcalf edging their team-mates to the top rink prize.

The County League brought win number three with a 37-19 success over Rosehill.

The result came thanks to a five with two ends to play from Mike Mahoney, John Oliver, Chamberlain and Steve Arnold and three fours from Dickie Jackson, George Campbell, Keith Smith and Derek Henley.

Datchworth did start the week with a loss though, going down 47-33 to Hertford in the Ranson Cup, both rinks losing, and there was defeat too for the Blues away to Buntingford in EHBL Division Three, George Campbell, Rob Hazeu and Henley the sole winners.
