Bowls clubs are finding the games and competition coming thick and fast now.

As well as their own matches, Shire Park Bowls Club (Tewin) hosted the St Albans & District match against London Scottish.

It proved a very close game with the district winning 81-76, the top rink including Bill Draycott and Angus Mullin, with new badges also presented to Barry Wright and Bill Griffiths.

Despite losing to Welwyn & District home and away in the Jones Cup, there was success in the Welwyn Hatfield League where the Greens picked up four points away to Welwyn Woods.

That was partly due to an 18-9 rink win for Richard Griggs, Alan Goddard and Byron Sinfield, helping them to an overall 28-27 win.

They also picked up four points at home to Welwyn Wanderers with a 34-24 success, the rink of Chris Wright, Andy Short and Paul Ashwell winning 24-9.

The Yellows went one step further and took all six points at home to Welwyn Garden City winning 54-24 overall.

In the only friendly of the week, Shire Park lost a very close match by one shot, 68-67.

This was only thanks to the final shot of the game by the opposition skip, picking up four shots and nudging them to victory.

Shire Park will be holding open days on Saturday, Sunday and Monday where potential new members will be welcomed and offered half-price membership for the first year.

Datchworth’s week of bowling got off to a good start on Monday night when their men travelled to Hertford’s Hartham to play Sele Farm in the County’s Men’s Club Championship, returning with a 57-42 success.

They went undefeated across the three rinks, the 19-11 win for Keith Smith, Ian Green, Steve Arnold and Peter Hills just edging the 19-12 victory for George Campbell, Steve Chamberlain, Rob Hazeu and Les Parsley.

The final quartet of Dickie Jackson, Graham Akers, Derek Henley and Jim Smith had a tussle all the way through their game, dropping a shot on the final end to draw 19-19.

The Gold team started their East Herts Bowls League Division Three season with a 40-24 win at home to Rosehill Kingfishers.

The top rink was Ian Green, Dave Castle and Steve Chamberlain who won 23-9 but arguably the best win was the 17-15 success for Phil Berry, Richard Harper and Terry Metcalf, picking up 14 shots on the final three ends to come from 15-3 down.

Datchworth couldn't continue their good run though as the Welwyn Hatfield League match at Hertford Wild Cards ended in 38-22 loss, both rinks falling to defeat.
